We were just Skyping with a friend in turmoil. He had just gotten an upsetting voicemail from a sibling and wanted some quick advice on how to handle the situation.
He was surprised when we told him only one thing:
We know all too well how – when something comes up (usually negative) – your brain has an instinct to react rapidly. We also know – from multiple screw ups – that reacting at the height of emotion is not a smart move.
We couldn't tell our friend what to do, but we assured him that clarity would come with time. We advised him to try to hold out for four hours and, if he was able, even longer.
In Casa NVR, we have a 24 hour rule. When something jolting comes up, we try to give it at least a full day. Most of the time, it's a true experiment in patience.
I'll tell you what, though..... neither one of us has ever regretted waiting.
The waiting is the hardest part. –Tom Petty
