As location-independent business owners, healthcare insurance has always been a tad tricky for us.
Since we're on the road a lot, a robust out-of-country benefit has become increasingly important. But, since we're also in the USA quite a bit, we need coverage for when we're in our home territory.
Unfortunately, we were part of that segment of the population that "lost" when the Affordable Care Act was rolled out. Our monthly rates went up for a similar level of coverage. The good news, though, is that the core benefits are more robust. As guys who rarely (never!) need to use the benefits, it's a tough pill to swallow.
Even so. we're huge fans of the upside. Healthcare for all is essential for a thriving country, and we know that – one day – we will be using that insurance. Many people wanting to strike out on their own ask us what we think about foregoing health insurance.
We say NO. It's simply too much of a gamble to go without. Starting your own gig can be stressful enough; accept the peace of mind that comes with knowing you have healthcare coverage.
