When we last wrote, we left you with our best eats in Italy. Prior to that, we shared the views from our calorie-busting run and some of our favorite photos. We could get into the details of so many components of our journey in Italy. It's not going to happen because, now hanging out at Niagara Falls, we already have a new stack of experiences behind us.
Remember at the beginning of the year, when we declared that 2013 would be the year of living boldly? Well, it has been – but in a way that we never saw coming. For us, bold hasn't meant doing more or stretching ourselves, as we thought it might. It's turned out to be even better.
Bold has meant scaling back. Doing less. Leaning into our priorities. Living our NVR life.
Truth is – as we've alluded to – our NVR lifestyle was becoming so good that it was exhausting us. We were, as it turned out, merely creating a different version of the corporate-centric life we jettisoned years ago. We've since course-corrected, which has also meant reminding ourselves of the purpose of this site.
Our soul-searching confirmed that this site isn't really about the nitty gritty details of our adventures; it's about telling our life / work / travel story and, hopefully, providing inspiration along the way. 95% of the e-mails we get are from people who want to create more fulfilling lives. They see that we've done it, and they want to do it too. Those e-mailers want to create their own version of a NVR life.
If we're not "doing" then we're not very inspiring.
That fact routinely reminds us of our 80/20 rule – a big part of how we maintain this lifestyle. In short, we strive to be "doing" – living our NVR life – 80% or more of the time. This is how we sustain forward momentum and keep from falling into things that are a waste of time, which is the fast-track to negativity. We want to live intentionally, with purpose. We can't stop "doing." This site, in a perfect world, is a reflection of that.
To accomplish this, we can't be indiscriminately getting involved in things.
So, we're selective. For instance, if we were to only do any old press trip that came along, our claimed thirst for meaningful travel would smack inauthentic. This, by the way, is why we also apply the 80/20 rule to media opportunities. We limit our partnerships here in NVR-land to only those things that are right in our pocket – that we'd be loony to not do. Besides, this website is just one small part of our NVR equation. Remember, we have a business that we're crazy about.
So, we really just want No Vacation Required to be a periodic record of our real journey. We hope it awakens other ordinary people who might see a bit of themselves in us – our mistakes, our triumphs.
We're here to document what's on our minds at any given time during our journey, and you're here, we've learned, for a little motivation to bring the best version of you to the surface. It's cathartic for us and, hopefully, helpful for you.
So, while we won't get into guidebook-like details of our travel adventures, we'll post a few photos and tell a few stories. Ideally, those photos and anecdotes will prompt you to want to create your own amazing path, and you'll e-mail us for tips on how to live the life you really want to live.
And those are the best e-mails.
