We lucked out on Small Business Saturday. Since we never close charge/credit cards we no longer use – because it can hurt your credit (how screwed up is that?) – we had a few retired American Express cards that we could fire up for the event.
If you don't already know, SBS allows you to get a $25 statement credit for every Am/Ex card on which you make a charge at a small business on SBS.
We had a good time supporting small businesses in our hood here in Seattle. It was especially fun because we are usually traveling during this part of the year. Being a part of the local holiday hubbub got us in the holiday spirit for sure.
This year, we've been trying especially hard to remain mindful of how fortunate we are to live this NVR life. We're trying to make an extra effort to be as good about giving back as we are about receiving.
So, in the midst of our SBS-induced whirlwind of positive emotions, we thought we'd do a little giving. We decided to surprise our favorite local service person with a gift card. She's a checker at our neighborhood grocery store. No matter how poorly we see customers treating her (as if, for example, she herself orchestrated the law requiring a fee for grocery bags), she remains kind and helpful. She always recognizes us and takes a moment to share a laugh.
She really seemed to love the gesture and the recognition.
We highly recommend that you try this little experiment at home. Recognize an unsuspecting someone with a small token of your appreciation. It'll make their day and yours.
Speaking of the season of giving and receiving, be sure to check out the couple of exciting things we have going on here at NVR:
1) Our Celebrate Seattle giveaway, featuring 2 nights at the gorgeous Four Seasons Seattle.
2) Our Passports with Purpose initiative. Help to provide clean water in Haiti and have a chance at winning a stay in paradise.
Check them both out! And, like us, do not use credit/charge cards to rack up debt; use them only to rack up miles, points and perks.
