The Great Elderberry Debacle of 2012

by NVR Guys

Earlier this week, I woke up to the sound of a violently ill Caanan. Clearly, all has not been perfect on our hiking/camping extravaganza.

Turns out that you shouldn’t eat elderberries right off of the bush. Apparently, it’s a berry that needs to be cooked first (for jams, etc.). Too bad that Caanan had to learn that the hard way. On a hike that day, the trail was bursting with (what we thought were huckleberries and later learned were) elderberries. Caanan tried a few along the way and started paying the price about 12 hours later.

Of course, we had to rejigger our plan of action. It hasn’t been all bad. As we’re out a computer – and having to share one for work – the down time has had an upside.

Besides, it gives us a chance to post a few more pictures.

Feel Better Soon Caanan! That’s the worst…. well not the eating berries, I’ve never done that. But being sick, ugh. Yuck! I feel for you and I am wishing you a happy tummy soon.

  2. So sorry to hear about the berry misfortune! I was just eating tons of wild berries on the trails/mountainside in Austria… thankfully my hiking companions know much more about safe wild stuff than I. We had mostly blueberries and blackberries. But I think I ate a few mysterious ones, too. (!) Don’t want to end up like Mr Into-Thin-Air!!

I’m so impressed with your landscape photos. Mine rarely end up share worthy.

    Feel better soon, Caanan!

Sorry you got so sick, Caanan. I wouldn’t even know what a huckleberry (or for that matter, an elderberry) looked like so probably wouldn’t pick and eat one. We don’t get those in California.

    Beautiful photos, as always!

Well now I know something about elderberries that I never knew before. Hope you’re recovering ok, Caanan! I absolutely ADORE that final picture by the way, guys. That looks like some hiking I could get on board with ;)

I feel much better – but that was a rough couple of days. Lesson learned = don’t eat berries directly from the shrub/bush/tree. You never know what you might be getting yourself into :) Caanan

    Glad you’re feeling better now!

All I can ever think of when I see/hear the word elderberry is Monty Python’s the Holy Grail ;-)

  13. Really like the last photo.

I am so ignorant about what is edible or poisonous (honestly cannot recognize poison ivy), so I never ever eat anything out in the wilderness.

I remember a comic from ages ago like that. One guy gives a berry to the next saying “here try this”. The second asks the first “sure, why?” and the first answers”I want to see if it is poisonous.”.

Nice pictures, but a shame you had to be sick to post them.

Thanks, Deb. It was no huge deal. Mainly, I felt like a ding dong for eating them.
