The Best Washington DC Memorial
For years now – with every visit to Washington DC – we tease it. Well, it’s now time to “put a ring” on our pick for the top memorial in this attraction-rich city.
The Franklin Delano Roosevelt (FDR) Memorial, located on the southwest shore of the Tidal Basin, is everything. Expansive, Beautiful and Moving. Set across almost eight acres, the memorial uses a series of outdoor “rooms” to reflect the 12 years of FDR’s presidency. The memorial, comprised largely of stone, sculpture and water, urges visitors to reflect on one of the most difficult periods in American history.
We especially love the themes of humanity, decency and peace that are evident throughout the memorial.
Additionally, every detail in the seemingly serene and simple memorial is anything but. For instance, all of the falls and fountains in the memorial are a nod to FDR’s love of water. Interestingly, as you move through the memorial, the waterfalls become larger and more intricate. We learned that this signifies the difficultly of leading the country through an increasingly complex and tumultuous period.
The next time you are in DC, do what we do. Spend a chunk of time hanging out at the FDR Memorial.

What about you – What’s your favorite DC attraction?

I was there a year ago and absolutely loved it. The waterfalls are great, especially at night.
Yes, it’s a great memorial at night. All of them are, actually.
This looks beautiful, thanks for the report. I’ve actually never been to DC as an adult so I can’t name a favorite. I’m hoping to go in the next month or two (finally!) Right now I just have memories of visiting the Washington Monument in middle school.
Already excited to hear your (quirky) thoughts.
I missed DC on my trip, but this looks beautiful. Love how larger waterfalls signify challenges in a manner that gives hope.
Don’t miss DC next time!
I don’t actually remember seeing this memorial when we were in D.C. a few years ago. I love waterfalls, though, so I’m not sure how I missed it!
Go through your photos and make sure. Ah, what am I saying… I’m sure you’d remember it.
I have never been to DC, actually I’d love to hear what people say because I wasn’t sure there was much there besides government buildings.
DC is a killer place to visit. Great vibe, lots to do, good food. Oh, and good food. Did I mention good food?
This is definitely one of my favorites places in DC.
I’m also a huge fan of Signers Island, a little-known and mostly isolated memorial to the original signers of the Declaration of Independence.
Thanks for the tip. We’ll check it out next time.
All right you two, quit being so loveable. That’s MY favorite memorial in DC too. I was so moved by it when I first saw it that I’ve never forgotten the way I felt there. He may not have been a perfect man but that memorial just really gets me. And it’s so physically beautiful and calming.
Calming… perfect word.
Not surprised you like it too
I have not been to that one. Up to now my favorite has been the Jefferson Memorial. Will definitely have to check it out.
The Jefferson Memorial is so stunning to look at… another good one on the Tidal Basin.
It looks really peaceful. I love your last shot of the waterfalls.
Thanks, Christy – we’ve been experimenting with the camera.
That was a hard choice! I grew up going to DC memorials (I lived in northern Virginia until I was 11), so I love when others feel attachment to them!
Which are your favorites?
I agree completely. An incredible monument with amazing words of wisdom. I just wish American politicians took the time to stroll through it for inspiration more often.
Truth!
What a great message! With so many memorials in DC I have to admit that I never gave this one much thought. Thanks for sharing
Certainly looks very peaceful and calm place. Loved the water on the rocks, soothing to the eyes.
I loved that memorial – definitely different from the others… and a great message too!
I totally agree — I LOVE this memorial!
Great photos guys! We haven’t been back to DC a while now. The last time I was there was probably 10 years ago! I loved all the free museums they had!
DC is one of those places I never get tired of! The FDR memorial is one of the amazing places to visit. Great pictures.
How come I’ve been to DC three times and haven’t been there? It’s absolutely gorgeous. Thanks for the tip! Next time…
But as for a regular sight, I’d say the reflecting pond.
My favourite thing to do in DC was watching the Nationals beat the Braves on 4th of July
We agree that any monument dedicated to love the themes of humanity, decency and peace are the best.
