Luxury on a Budget in Rome

by NVR Guys
Rome - Coliseum

We’re back from Vegas, resuming a slower paced, blur-free life.

Here it is, the end of January, and we’re feeling way behind in our efforts to get travel mapped out for 2012. We’re just starting to make progress brainstorming the outline of possible itineraries. One thing looks fairly certain. No Europe.

For a lot of years now, we’ve resisted traveling to Europe.

Why? Well, try this experiment for the answer… Click over to your favorite hotel booking search engine. Pop in, say, Rome along with some randomly selected dates. Click the “submit” button. Wait for the results while enjoying this picture of the Coliseum in Rome:

Now that you’ve seen your search results, picked yourself up off the ground, rubbed your eyes and confirmed that the high prices are in fact true, you know why we’ve – for the most part – chosen to head to other destinations. We love it over there, but our US dollar does not do too well against the Euro. In general, it’s not a great travel investment when you consider what you can do/see in other parts of the world for the same amount of money.

But the truth is, I only said resisted Europe. We’ve actually been to that part of the world a few times in the last several years. While planning something budget-friendly nearly kills us every time we go, we consistently manage to stretch our dollars as far as possible. You can enjoy a budget trip Europe. Of course, staying in hostels and visiting out-of-the-way places is a smart idea. But what if you want to visit the biggies – (London, Paris, Rome, etc.), and a hostel, room, apartment isn’t in the cards for you?

There’s hope.

Our biggest deal-finding coup during our recent travels through Europe came in Rome. Because we were piecing things together last minute and our dates were unsure, we had an especially challenging time finding something suitable in the Eternal City, where prices for a decent hotel (and oftentimes awful ones, too) are typically sky high.

We knew our search was over when, after a lot of of hard work, we found a room at Hotel Capitolium for only $76.

Yes, it’s true – $76 a night. Is it a full-on “luxury” accommodation? No. But it turned out to be a remarkable find of solid quality. It’s a tiny hotel (7 rooms, I think) and it’s actually part of an apartment building. Constructing mini-hotels within apartment buildings is becoming common in Rome, we learned. It had its glitches but, all told, worked very well for us.

Discoveries like this often fall below the radar because they aren’t large properties and they aren’t amenity rich (which captures attention and star ratings). Think about it though. It’s Rome. You don’t need stuff to do in the hotel. Extra bells and whistles are superfluous. You simply need the basics – done well.

The base rate included free wi-fi and breakfast – both mesh nicely with our typical day and keep us from getting add-on-fee induced headaches. Have a look at this uncharacteristic-for-Rome courtyard view that we had. No street noise and sleepless nights for us.

So, if you’re heading to Rome, we’ve done the work for you. Book this place. If you’re heading elsewhere in Europe, check into apartments or give Priceline’s Name Your Own Price a shot (we rarely have a bad experience). Before making any decision, though, do plenty of research. Any smart traveler does loads and loads of it. You can use some of the resources we’ve written about previously as inspiration.

Do not settle for high, valueless hotel prices. Similarly, don’t settle for budget prices that leave you scared to crawl into the bed.

Three cheers for budget luxury. Well, almost luxury.

Boy do I wish I had heard about the Capitolium Hotel when we were in Rome last time! We were on a tight budget too and spent about $120 on the biggest dump in the world!

We had an especially difficult time finding the right place in Rome. Reading comments on the different boards definitely scared us away from a number of places.

Okay, this is fate. We’re just debating whether to go and stay with a friend in Italy for a week in Italy. We were also just debating that if we did, could afford a night in Rome. Well, maybe we can!! :) Thanks!

Cool – glad this might help a little. It’s a good place; check it out.

Great find guys. We are getting into some of the apartment renting places to look for rooms. We have had some good luck with AirBnB finding places in residential areas for cheaper than hotels.

As much as I like the service of a hotel, it usually Feels like a hotel. There is something nice about in a place that feels lived in, instead of only a visitor, whatever the service level.

    Great view you had though.

We really tried to make an apartment work but nothing came together. Well, one did, but the owner wanted a 400 Euro deposit for a stay of less than a week. Ridiculous! Also, shared accommodations (couch surfing, rooms in a house, etc.) don’t typically work well for us because we sometimes have to keep strange work hours to mesh with worldwide clients. Nothing like keeping your hosts awake with a Skype call in the middle of the night :)

That is a pretty high deposit. I know we did a deposit for the apartment weekend in Paris ,but it ended up being some sort of block and unblock on the credit card as opposed to any real money changing hands.

I totally get the weird working hours. That would not be good for rooms or couch surfing.

When compared to, say, Wynn or Encore, it’s noting special :) BUT, for Rome, a definite find.

Looks like you guys really did find a great deal. Maybe I can convince the bf to splurge on me one night and stay here. I’ve been told our sleeping accommodations will include couches, tents and hostels. Yikes! ( excited yikes!)

After lots of traveling, we too believe that “luxury” is a relative term. Would we consider this hotel “luxury” in, say, Vegas? No way. Would we consider it “luxury” after a 2 week camping adventure? Absolutely.

It’s not “luxury” as the word popularly defined, bit it is “luxury” for that price.

Thank you for the recommendation, guys! I’m looking for a good cheap place to stay in Rome in May. I’m all over this. I’ll let you know if I stay there.

Italy is one of my favorite countries. There’s a possibility my parents might come visit me and Andy this year and then all of us travel through Italy, so I’m definitely going to look up this hotel. I’m glad you found such a great deal, and that the wifi was included!

If you read our more detailed review (link within post), you’ll see that it’s not without flaws. However, for $76 a night the value is astounding (for Rome).

  9. Our one and only time staying in a hostel dorm room was in Rome – normally we hate hostels (I can’t sleep when other people are snoring!), but it was the only affordable option we found. Rome is sooo expensive.

We’re actually heading back to Europe again this summer and I’m already cringing at what it’ll do to our wallets. Thank Maude for housesitting! :P

I don’t know how long you guys are in Italy, but if you get a chance make your way to the Adriatic Coast. There’s a little town outside of Pescara called Francavilla al Mare (my family lives there) and it’s beautiful. It’s real Italia.

The timing of this article couldn’t be more perfect. We’re heading to Rome in April and would love some luxury in the city of love. I’m heading over to book a couple of nights. We agree, the Canadian dollar even fares worse than the US dollar against the Euro and we love Europe, but resist it as well. We just fly through our budget there. 2 summers ago we camped our way around which made it more affordable, but definitely not luxurious:) Cheers, Guys.
