Doing Deco In SoBe

by NVR Guys
Miami South Beach Architecture 2

Good thing we got all rested up and contemplative on our crawl through the Mediterranean and across the Atlantic. Turns out we needed that huge reserve of physical and mental energy for what was to come next.

After disembarking in Fort Lauderdale and enjoying lunch and a tour with friends we met in Alaska, we hit the South Beach area of Miami for a few days.

It hit us like a ton of bricks. It’s a vibrant, part dirty, part polished, people watching, sun worshiping mecca.

Our days there were all about good food (Cuban!), beach time, people watching and Art Deco peeping. We made a point of walking and running a lot in order to begin to offset the damage done by vulgar amounts of pasta and gelato in Italy.

Our favorite activity – by a long shot – was roaming around to check out the incredible architecture. Apparently, most of it is based on Streamline Moderne design, which is a late stage off-shoot of Art Deco. With that too brief description, we’ll leave you with a few of our favorite shots

Beautiful! I never thought I’d be a Miami person–I’m far from the partier type–but I absolutely love that city.

We couldn’t keep up with the pace (given our travels) but we loved the Art Deco buildings (and the people watching – those clothes… my god).

Also, Cuban-American is my FAVORITE. Funny, when I was in Cuba, though, the food was terrible…but Cuban food in America, delicioso!

We’ve heard that before! We really loved having the chance to enjoy Cuban food, which isn’t in large supply in most places.

Thanks. Did you also notice that blue sky that’s been following us on this entire journey. Okay, I’m done bragging about the weather now.

Enjoyed the architecture in Miami but not the town. Especially not south beach for some reason. Not my place.
It is a neat place to look at all the streamlined shapes, though I prefer Art Nouveau swirls which are a bit earlier.

We hear you. SoBe is a place we appreciated and loved visiting, but not a place that we could live.

We stayed at a hotel in Prague that was formerly a theater done in the Art Nouveau style. It was a beautifully remodeled mixture of contemporary glass and brass swirls – a real stunner.

My son’s at U of M–looking forward to a visit–no good cubano food in San Antonio!

Who in the heck needs Cubano food when you are that close to Mexico? :)

I’m obsessed with Miami… I actually grew up in Orlando and went to UM. You can guess how much time I spent at work vs South Beach. ;-)

We’ve gotta hear more about this one day :)

  7. Miami! We had a blast people watching in South Beach… there were a lot of mostly naked female go-go dancers, mostly naked male volleyball players, lots of expensive cars, hapless tourists, a dude with a lemur on his shoulder… I swear we saw it all. =P

Cool post, guys! Since it’s not really GGT’s thing, I have to share my South Beach story with you. The first and only time I’ve been there, I was flown down on business to do some celebrity interviews. So my first day ever in Miami, I’m interviewing Sophia Vergara and Rosalyn Sanchez (in bikinis, no less) by the pool of the swanky Shore Club Hotel; I walk down the beach to see MTV filming their Spring Break specials about 300 yards away; and that night I have dinner at Iron Chef Matsuhisa’s NOBU. I don’t think I’ll ever top that experience…

Gorgeous photos. I especially love the one of the car fin. I’ve never been to Miami, never really had a reason to go, but I’d like to check it out someday.
And yes, you seriously were blessed with amazing weather!

  11. Nifty, I didn’t know you were headed that way. The architecture was really fascinating. I was there not long ago (series of posts coming in January!) and I’ve been talking about making South Beach my winter residence, starting next year. I don’t know how much work I’d get done with the beach nearby, though…

I lived in South Florida for a year and a half and never had any desire to visit Miami…until now. Love this vignette of Miami’s art deco style!

Ahhh…I love South Beach! I’ve seen practically nothing else of Miami except South Beach, but that’s good enough for me. It’s a blast. I love, love, love the Art Deco buildings there. And the music. And the beach. And the food. And…. :-)
