Postcard from Alaska – Hitting the Rails
We’ve left the isolated forest service cabin and are no longer living in fear of an unwelcome bear encounter. Also, we’ve had the last of our astronaut food, so we’re happy guys (although the three berry cobbler was surprisingly good).
Before we get to the more splashed out part of this journey, we have a couple more hardcore(ish) adventures planned.
Where? Denali.
Here are a couple of photos from our time on the Alaska Railroad. It’s owned by the State of Alaska and runs between Whittier/Seward and Fairbanks. These shots were taken near Denali.
It’s 100% autumn here. Gorgeous.

Autumn! I can’t wait for the leaves to start changing over here. I’m also disappointed to not have read some sort of grizzly bear smackdown on here. You could totally take him.
We were totally surprised to find autumn in Alaska. We were totally happy to not find a grizzly at our cabin.
wow! i’ve got so much of your adventure to catch up on! this looks like so much fun. can’t wait to read about and hear more!
Us too, Lorna!
Glad yall enjoyed it. I love the pic of y’all two together. Such a cute couple…
~
Thanks, Jaime – after looking so grubby while in the backcountry, it felt great to be “camera ready” – all showered up and smiling. We had to snap some shots of our glee (and cleanliness) before being unpresentable again up in Denali (details next week).
What’s the temperature up there, it looks downright balmy!
Autumn… chilly nights/mornings and warm days. It’s perfect.
Oh, I can’t wait to hear all about Denali. Definitely going to go there next time I’m in Alaska. Also, can’t wait to hear more about the railroad trip, also something I want to do. It’s hard to balance enjoying your travels and writing about them at the same time, isn’t it??
Can’t wait for the beautiful fall colors when we head to New York/New England next month. Although it gets pretty nice here in Kentucky too!
Riding the railroad up here is a blast. Sensory overload (in a good way).
Yes, it can be tough to crank out posts while traveling, but we like to keep things pretty close to real time. That way, we’re not writing about this in 2013 (when, you know, Sarah Palin might be in charge of the country).
Love that last photo!
Thanks, Stephanie – us too. We’re at the v e r y end of that train (hangin’ with all the smokers). Cool perspective.

Oooh, we saw that train!
We saw you!
I can’t wait to see this next summer. Every photo of this area make me want to visit even more.
You will not be disappointed. We must talk before you go.
That 3rd pic of the Alaska Railroad is amazing! And of course the pic of the two of you is awesome!
Thanks, Liane. Glad you can’t tell that the wind is making that picture nearly impossible. Our eyes are watering, etc. Anything for a good shot
Hi, just found your blog from a comment you left on Married With Luggage. We were in Alaska for part of June, awesome place! I think I have that same photo of the river and train! Fantastic! And we absolutely adored Denali, it was SO beautiful! Will be interested to read more of your adventures
Cheers
Thanks for visiting, Judy! We loved that train ride and thought Denali was out of this world. Watch for more posts this week.
Looks absolutely heavenly!! The two of you seem over the moon!!!
Thanks for the pics, have a great Sunday:)
Thanks, Arti. We are over the moon. All cleaned up after the backcountry stuff. No complaints.
Aaah beautiful! One of these grand train journeys in BC/AB/Alaska is something I’d like to do someday. Looks like you’re having a great time!
This was a (very) short one, but it felt grand to us!
what a gorgeous view! my BFF named her dog Denali b/c of how much they loved that place! can’t wait to see more posts on denali!
I understand your friend’s reasoning. It’s high up on our list of favorites.
Astronaut food?!? Sounds…. delicious?
I should say astronaut-ish food. It WAS actually pretty good. Three cheese lasagna and that three berry cobbler.
Totally jealous of your ride on the Alaska Railroad. Great pics. You definitely look like you’re enjoying yourselves!
We are – although it was actually too short. I mean, they served drinks and decent food on that thing
Is there ever enough time under those circumstances
Looks gorgeous. Thank you for letting me live vicariously through you while I am student teaching. I can’t wait to travel.
We can’t wait to read about your travels
How beautiful! Love the train shots, makes me long to get on another train.
I hear you. We don’t do it much, but whenever we’re on a train, we can’t wait to get back on one.
The romance of a train ride… okay, this one really makes me happy. I can’t think of a more beautiful trip. Well, I’m hoping the trans-siberian is like this. And for that, I can’t wait!
It was nice and pretty luxe too. A definite departure from the days prior (camping).
What great photos! I’ve always wanted to see Alaska by rail.
I’m so jealous you got to see Alaska by rail! I really wish the US was more connected that way. I did a scenic ride on the Rocky Mountaineer a few years ago–from Vancouver to Jasper to Banff to Lake Louise–and it was one of the most beautiful trips I’ve ever done.
Looks amazing! We didnt try taking the rail when we were up in Alaska. Sounds like we should put it on our list!!!
Great to see yet another traveler go to Alaska this year – must be the year to do that trip – could have had a mini tbex there. Love the pictures
very nice view. alsaka is my favorite place for vacations.
