Postcard from Alaska – Sunshine and a Glacier
Since our last post was all doom and gloom, we wanted to let you know that we remodeled our plans and found some hiking-friendly weather. We made our way down to Wrangall-St. Elias National Park.
Here is a photo of the region.
We stayed on the Copper River, which is famous for one of the most hyped salmon runs in the world (about two million use the river each year for spawning.) Salmon activity also means bear activity.
What we weren’t expecting is that mid-August brings autumn to the region. The aspen trees are turning a gorgeous gold and oranges and crimsons are popping up. Snow will arrive next month, and it will stick by October.
Speaking of snow, we made a trip down towards Valdez to check out Worthington Glacier – one of the most accessible in Alaska. It’s located near Thompson Pass, known as the snowiest place in the state.
We have now moved on to the Kenai Peninsula and are about to take off on a backcountry adventure (rain or shine) to to a remote lakeside cabin.
More once we get to the other side of this adventure.

Beautiful pics! I love aspens too…saw a boatload of them on my recent trip to Vail
Wowowow! That’s not a bad slice of real estate you’ve got there. I’ve only seen Alaska from a cruise ship (and at port cities/towns)–I really need to see REAL Alaska.
Fantastic pictures! I love the first one most and I think the golden colors of the aspen trees. So far no bear activities I guess:D
Great pictures and looks like you were having fun
So incredibly beautiful! Glad to hear you guys are having a great time – these sights are breathtaking in the photos – and I know they are even way better in reality! Have a good time at that lakeside cabin.
Looks like a wonderful adventure. I hope the weather cooperates.
Beautiful photography! It seems so peaceful and unspoiled. But the real question is—can you see Russia from your house?
Glad everything is running smoothly for you now, after a rough start! So did you see any bears in the river??
Looks Beeeeautiful!
Wow, what a landscape.
Looking very beautiful guys! Glad you’re having a blast there.
Brrrr! I hope you guys have some warm gear with you.
I don’t know why but a remote lakeside cabin in the back country sounds really romantic! I’m flashing Brad Pitt – Legend of the Falls =)
One of the best parts of long-term travel is being able to change your plans when things aren’t going the way you want. Glad you found good weather and good hiking.
These are amazing pics… The place is magical, almost heavenly!!!
Have a fabulous weekend:)
That does look beautiful… looking forward to reading about the rest of your experiences there!
Looks amazing even though I am not ready to see snow yet. We get an inordinate amount of it here in upstate NY. We even have some decent salmon fishing here too!
Glad to see the start of the trip was not the trend for the whole adventure!
I’m glad your trip has turned around for the better. I can’t wait to hear about the salmon run and if you did indeed see any bears. Alaska is a magical place, so glad you are enjoying it.
It HAS turned around. We were certainly thrown off a bit at the start and are now beyond happy with how things have unfolded. Funny how life works…
Looks amazing! Glad things turned around for you guys – never doubted it
